The 13th Floor Elevators

Determine a band's leader by analyzing a publicity photo.

A band's inclusion on this blog reflects neither an endorsement nor a criticism of its music. This post is merely intended as a spotlight on the inner political workings of a collection of individuals who are in the midst of a cooperative, creative endeavor.

The Process:
You, dear reader, please answer the question, "Who's in charge here?"

After sufficient discussion has taken place, a verdict can then be passed based on a majority vote.

Band: The 13th Floor Elevators
Genre: Psychedelic
Website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13th_Floor_Elevators (Wikipedia)

Voting ends on: Monday, April 19th, 9:00am CST (GMT-5)

THE VERDICT (Updated!)

Voting has ended.

Here is the tally:

Mr. Smiley Shortsleeves: 2 votes
Circular Right: 1 vote

Congrats to Mr. Smiley Shortsleeves! You're in charge!

though it may well be that butch vig's brother (top middle) is in charge, my official vote is for mr. smiley shortsleeves, probably because he has the least-shifty eyes.

(w.v. "squilla" : the portugese word for wearing hippie love beads over a buttoned dress shirt.)

Butch Vig's Brother: "This publicity shot is going to be great, guys."

Sensible Mullet (bottom left): "I know! I'm so excited!"

Leader: "Hey, guys, listen. I gave it a lot of thought and I just don't want you guys looking at the camera at the same time as me. You understand. So, if you could all look anywhere else, that would be awesome. This is going to be a great shot! Are you stoked?"

Butch Vig's Brother: "..."

Sensible Mullet: (sobbing) "Why? Why do you think that's a good idea?"

Leader: "Because 'Leader,' that's why."

Shia LaBeouf (back left): "I will beat you with a sock filled with quarters while you sleep! You hear me!?!"

And... scene!

It is well known that members of the rhythm section do not wear beads. The beads would get in the drummer's way and the bass player, well, he just forgets to wear his.

Bead-wearer on the top right is in the shadows (always a nod toward leadership in my book). It was clearly his idea to wear the beads and he's obviously not happy with the bead choices of his fellow bead-wearers. "This was once a cool idea and now look at us," he thinks to himself in exasperation.

Also, top right is one of the two band members who was allowed (per McGone) to look in the camera. Unlike the other camera-looker, he is wearing beads.

Circularly speaking, top right is in charge.

This is one of our local bands. Circled dude just released an album with Okkervil River and we saw them play together last month. There's a documentary about him called "You're Gonna Miss Me" and it is some really crazy crap about the hazards of untreated schizophrenia combined with rockstar stuff.
That publicity shot looks like it was taken by a band member's mom or something.
