The guy with the apple is clearly trying to appease someone, so not him.

I'm going to go with the couch. It's the only one who didn't feel the need to dress up, probably because it doesn't have to; it's the boss.

It's hard for me to be objective, since I'm a fan of this band. Both guys on the sofa have a commanding presence. The one on the right has nicer shoes, but his body language puts up a bit of a barrier. The guy on the left has something tasty to offer us, so I vote for him. And he's the only one with a prop, so the photographer was distinguishing him from the rest of the guys.

neither of the armrest-sitters are in charge, period. i often vote by seniority, which would be mr.standing-right, but not in this case. it has to be one of the two seated guys. though mr.redapple may think he's in charge, my vote is for mr.redtie, who talked him into taking a bite of the apple.

The two seated guys look like insurance salesmen, so I'm ruling them out. Guys on the arms of the couch are trying a little too hard IMO, so that leaves Phil Collins and the IT guy. I'll go with Phil Collins.

Red tie seated on sofa, he has a look which says "...and?" There's control there.
I did think most of them would pass as a leader, and they have arranged themselves so that no one is too out of it...perhaps they are a collective and share.

6 guys and a couch that's only big enough to seat 2 of them. It stands to reason that the leader is one of the guys who got a seat (and not on the arms; authority does not flow from such a makeshift seating arrangement).

Now did the apple-holder bring the apple to appease his couchmate, or did he receive the apple from one of the others and is sitting there, dissatisfied that it's not a Granny Smith? Given his Harvardy (I mean Stanfordy; they're Westerners) appearance and snotty face, I'll have to say he wanted a Granny Smith (Macoun?) and is therefore the leader.
